12/29/2023 0 Comments Configuring backblaze synology![]() ![]() As of about 6 months ago, newly created B2 buckets are S3 v4 compatible. When snapshots are removed, orphaned BLOBs eventually get purged. This has also the neat effect is deduplication of binary data, whether it's the same file across snapshots or in the same snapshot. Each backup snapshot just a list of meta data on the files for that snapshot and the files point to those BLOBs thus, each snapshot is as cheap as the delta since the last backup. All files are turned into immutable Binary Large Object (BLOB) files, which contains some chunk of data (one or more files). Synology HyperBackup is a good solution, if not cranky at times. If the only way I could recover my data was to purchase another Synology unit, then that's what I'd do ![]() I'm not too fussed about vendor lock in.I'm okay with waiting a couple of weeks to restore data at a slower pace/higher price Documents are in OneDrive, code is in Github, photos are on my phone (+OneDrive). I don't care too much about data recovery times. It's only accessible via a reverse proxy to client devices, NFS to my ESXi share and SMB to a single share for Time Machine Backups. The Synology sits on its own VLAN and isn't exposed to the internet.Think major flood that wipes out my hard drives This is purely an offsite, last resort backup for my photos and documents. If I enable encryption at the Synology level, I presume that will be incompatible with object lock (as Synology will be trying to overwrite encrypted blobs)Īnd a couple of assumptions about my purpose:.Should I enable encryption at the Synology level or at the Backblaze level.Should I turn on object lock in Backblaze to mitigate against potential ransomware attacks?.Unfortunately that broke the backup task, so I'm needing to set it up again, but wondering what the best config is? This was previously configured under the admin account, but I got tired of Synology nagging me, so I created a new account and disabled the old one. I use Synology Cloud Sync to backup my photos to a Backblaze B2 bucket. ![]()
